As much as I love playing DnD or other ttrpgs I have neither the time nor the friend pool to play them. In college we would play with friends on a whim with spiral notebooks. Nothing fancy.

Now we have the printed manuals and all that but nobody around to play. My husband schedules dnd nights with his irl friends over discord but even then, getting the whole group to align with the planets is difficult.

I want to play a dnd style game similar to the old text based DOS games. The hard part with those is the inputs are extremely limited to only a few key verbs and actions. When the game tells me I have come to a boarded up door, my instinct is to take my axe and chop down the boards to get in. The game only lets me LOOK or EXAMINE, then give me a multiple choice option to pick from.

Modern game engines could allow for more varied input and expansive choice options. I don't need the game to look like BG3. I could play an entire cyberpunk/retrofuture game on my phone with a UI that looks like text message conversations.

I think back to playing Mass Effect and having all the choices and options for my character to respond with. What bloats the game isn't the options and choice tree but the fact that every choice has to be re-acted with the male and female voice actors. Then there is all the options that happen with the various crew members and each of those changes drastically with each response. Making this all text based would leave so much more room for customization. So much dev time could be saved not having to live animate AAA graphics and focusing on dialog mechanics.

A sort of chat your own adventure, maybe there are preset modules just like in dnd you can run through it. Specific options, a wider range of choices, vastly higher replay value. A single player RPG all text based and affordable.
