Happy Discount Meat Day!

I go to the grocery store at least twice a week because we are a house of 6 people, 4 of which are adult level eaters. When I make food there are rarely leftovers. (Unless it was a failed experiment where I gave an online recipe the benefit of the doubt.)

Anyway, I went to the store to get eggs and cheese to make supper. I had planned to make chicken tortilla soup but when I went over to the meat counter there discount stickers on the packages. And it wasn't the typical 1 or 2 packs but like 5 or 6 per type. A raw steak is like $20 in Texas so I can only imagine how expensive it is elsewhere.

Hence we get real steak once every six months or so. All other forms of beef end up being ground burger meat or shaved/sliced round that I use for bulgogi. Everything else is chicken or pork now because the prices on meat are hilarious. But today was apparently Black Friday in the meat department. Several perfectly fresh steaks were marked down from 25-30 dollars down to 12-15 dollars.

For reference a normal meal at Whataburger will run you at least 12 dollars. A whole porterhouse for the price of Whataburger? You had me at porterhouse. So after grabbing three of these, I made my way to the seafood area and got two entire salmon filets for 15 each because apparently those were going to go bad any second and needed to be moved asap.

All the meat was fine. Sometimes you check the discount stuff and its turning grey or brown, these were indistinguishable from the more expensive fresh variants below them in the case. Did someone screw up with the discount pile in the back? Did someone rage quit this morning and mark it all down out of spite? Who knows, but the freezer in my garage is now full. Supper has been planned for the next week.

The steaks turned out great too.
